Is It Safe to Use a Leaking Electric Shower?

Writer: PlumberlyPlumberly

If you’ve noticed water leaking from your electric shower unit, you might be wondering whether it’s still safe to use. It can be tempting to carry on as normal, but a leaking electric shower isn't something you should ignore. In fact, it can cause serious safety risks and lead to costly damage if left unchecked.

Electric Shower

What Causes an Electric Shower to Leak?

There are several reasons why an electric shower might start leaking:

  • Worn Seals and Washers – Over time, seals and washers can degrade, allowing water to escape.

  • Cracked or Damaged Shower Unit – A crack in the casing or internal components can lead to leaks.

  • Loose or Faulty Connections – If the pipe connections aren’t secure, water may seep out.

  • Limescale Buildup – Hard water can cause limescale deposits, which may affect internal components and lead to leaks - particularly relevant in our area!

Is It Safe to Use a Leaking Electric Shower?

The short answer is no. Here’s why:

  • Risk of Electrical Faults – Water and electricity don’t mix. A leak inside the unit could cause short circuits or even an electric shock hazard.

  • Potential for Water Damage – A leaking shower can lead to damp walls, mould growth, and even structural damage if the issue isn’t fixed quickly.

  • Worsening of the Leak – What starts as a small drip can quickly become a bigger issue, potentially causing the unit to fail completely.

What Should You Do If Your Electric Shower Is Leaking?

  • Turn It Off Straight Away – Stop using the shower and switch off the power supply at the isolator switch.

  • Check for Visible Issues – Look for obvious signs of damage or loose connections, but do not attempt electrical repairs yourself.

  • Call a Qualified Plumber (like us!) – A professional can safely assess the issue, determine whether the shower can be repaired, or recommend a replacement.

How Long Does an Electric Shower Last in a Hard Water Area?

In hard water areas like ours in Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch, limescale buildup can significantly impact the lifespan of your shower. On average, a well-maintained electric shower can last 7 to 10 years. However, in homes with heavy limescale accumulation and minimal maintenance, a shower may only last 5 to 7 years before performance declines or leaks develop.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Electric Shower?

In some cases, tightening a connection may fix the leak. However, if the unit is old or the internal components are failing, a replacement may be the safest and most cost-effective option. We recently helped a customer in Bournemouth replace their leaking electric shower, ensuring they had a safe and fully functional unit installed properly.
